Justifying the Automation of Engineering Design
This paper describes an attempt to quantify the financial costs and benefits arising from automating the engineering design process for aerospace components. Two automation examples are examined and the usage on the F-35 JSF reviewed.

Automated System Routing
This paper discusses the development of an intelligent routing system for automating design of electrical wiring harnesses and pipes in aircraft. The system employs knowledge-based engineering (KBE) methods and technologies for capturing and implementing rules and engineering knowledge relating to the routing process.

Automated Composite Panel Optimisation
This paper describes the automated design of structural composite panels used in aerospace structures. The optimisation method uses a mixture of a genetic algorithm and heuristics which are used to satisfy the various design and manufacturing constraints.

Automated Feature Recognition
This paper describes a computer based feature recognition process to extract critical manufacturing features from CAD models. The feature recognition process was developed using rule-based methods with wire-frame geometry extracted from an IGES neutral file format and is demonstrated on a range of typical metallic aerospace components.

Automated Tooling Design
This article describes the automation of mould tool design for the manufacture of composite aircraft wing panels. The developed application was used to design the tooling for the fixed trailing edge wing panels of the Airbus A380 and resulted in significant project schedule and cost savings.
